  1. Get rid of any fruit before it goes bad, especially bananas. Black, spoiling bananas are notorious for drawing fruit flies. Store most fruit in the refrigerator and the fruit flies will be out of luck.  Except of course bananas, which Chiquita Banana says never to put in there!

You've had some good ideas for  fruit fly traps and things, but I'm not sure how that would look to a house guest, seeing zillions of FF's, dead or alive, in a glass with the bait on your counter top!! :-(   Yucchh.

An ounce of prevention is always worth a pound of cure.

  2. It is simple just get a saucer and pour in one of these.

    Beer

    Vinegar

    apple cider vinegar

    orange juice

    lemonade

Put it near a light source.

They drown, so what ever you have on hand.

  3. Fruit flies are so annoying. Last year I got them really bad in my house. The only thing that worked was putting away everything that was sweet and purchasing a bio-chemical to pour down the drains and spraying them with Raid fly killer. Ughhh they were awful. BTW bleach doesn't work.

    Wikihow says to do this:

    Make a glass trap:

Put a piece of fruit in a glass.

Cover the glass tightly with plastic wrap and secure to the glass.

Put a small hole in the plastic. The fruit flies go in and can't get out.

  4. Had this problem a couple of times and tried several home-remedy methods.  None worked completely---except putting up all food and TIME.  Here was my favorite and most effective for killing the little pests!  Get a tall glass and put a bit of cider vinegar and one drop of dishwashing soap to break the surface tension (they won't be able to just land on it and then fly off--it causes them to sink in it) in it.  Roll a piece of paper to a funnel with  very small opening at the bottom. Sit it in the glass being careful not to put it in the vinegar.  Tape it around the rim.  They will be drawn to the sweet smell, fly in and won't figure out how to get back out the small opening.  Looks gross on your counter so I wrapped a dish cloth around it and emptied it as needed.  Good luck!!!

  5. i have the same problem i been trying to figure that out too but i havent sorry

  6. "....Life cycle from egg to adult is approximately 10 days. Eggs are laid near or on top of fermenting materials, such as decaying fruit and vegetable matter. They are attracted to any area where moisture has accumulated. Flies are natural organisms in any decomposition system.

Always keep 3 to 4 inches of shredded moist newspaper on top of your worm bin to make it difficult for the female flies to lay eggs in the food waste.

To prevent fruit fly infestations you can freeze or microwave your food waste prior to placing in your bin. This destroys eggs and larvae that live on the peels. Allow the material to reach room temperature prior to feeding to worms.

To reduce existing fruit fly populations you can use a trap or find some beneficial nematodes from your local garden center and add them to the bin.

    Fruit Fly Traps

Simple bait traps made using a small pop bottle or fruit juice bottle can be effective against the adults. Two drops of soap to break surface tension is mixed with fruit juice, beer, or apple cider as an attractant. Fruit flies are attracted to the fruit juice and become trapped when they land to lay eggs. The trap can be even more effective by placing saran wrap over the mouth of the bottle and punching holes in the center of the saran wrap with a needle. The holes are made just big enough for the fruit fly to enter. The flies will be attracted by the juice, enter through the holes but cannot find their way out...."

  7. I had them in my kitchen real bad one time and I cut a peach in half and left a half on the kitchen counter for a couple hours to attract them all and then I zapped the peach with flying insect killer.Never had anymore problems with them.
