    Question

I have some markings inside my v****a.

They're very dark, nearly black. I'm not sure how long they have been there but it's been two months at least.

They are randomly scattered inside my v****a around my on v***a. They are not painful or lumpy, but I do suffer from a lot with thrush. I have tried to look at this myself with a mirror but, as I'm sure you can understand, it is very difficult.

It was my husband who first noticed it. He says I always used to be a pink colour and still am in the unmarked places.

The marks seem to run in lines around my v***a with some small makings around my clitoris and further down towards the opening of the birth canal. I had had a hysterectomy many years ago and have a testosterone and oestrogen inplant every six months.

I haven't had a smear test for about four years as the nurse didn't think it necessary as I had a full hysterectomy.

    Answer

As a women gets older the fatty tissue under the skin gets thinner, and veins are often easily visible as bluish black markings. If your marks are painless, it could be that they are actually veins showing through.

However, although it could be this it's not really possible for me to know what is causing the marks without examining you. What I suggest is that you arrange to see your GP so that he or she can examine you and let you know what these markings are.

If after examination it is still unclear what is going on, your GP will refer you to a specialist, either to a gynaecologist or a dermatologist (skin specialist) depending upon the appearance of these markings. From your description it sounds unlikely that they are anything to worry about.

The nurse that you saw was right to say that you do not need a smear. If you had a complete hysterectomy your cervix would have been removed, and unless the hysterectomy was done because of cancer, no further smears are now required.
