  1. If you are talking about the black margins on each side of the picture.. you can't do anything about it.

HDTV comes in a 16:9 aspect ratio, regular TV is 4:3.

So to watch regular TV on your new HD set the sides will be blank. Now you can zoom the picture and force it to fit but the people will look fat.

Until all TV goes HD....years in the future

and all TV production is done and broadcast  in the 16:9 format (probably never) you can't do nothing about it.

Take for example the TV show  "I Love Lucy"  it is still on TV some 60 years after it was produced . Remember all TV produced before 2003 was in the 4:3 ratio and you know re-runs will be around for a LONG LONG LONG TIME and there is NO way to change the aspect ration once the show has been produced unless you distort the TV picture.

  2. We just bought an LCD-tv, and my husband programs it to display in wide format (I think), and that gets rid of those black margins, but stretches the image and causes the picture to be less clear.  Your menu should allow you to view the image in a few different formats (wide, cinema, normal).

So, even if you bought, let's say a 32-inch tv, if you watch it in its optimal format (with the black side bars), you're really only watching a 28-inch tv.  THAT'S why I don't like LCD tellys.

    Good luck!
