How do i get started in this?

i want to get into writing, i did not study wring at colledge or university but i have always been very good at it. is there a way to get started in this industry without having the oficiall qualifications? i have looked into submitting a short story into readers digest but im not sure if this will help my career atall, also as a child i had my poetry published in a chldrens book from a competition i entered, is this worth putting in my resume? eventually i would love to write a column for a magazine such as more or seventeen etc, but i dont know what step to take to get my foot on the first rung of the ladder. please advise me where to go from here :)

If you want a career as a professional writer decide in which environment, write lots, submit it and be a pushy nuisance until you get an opportunity. That's about it really.

Newspapers ALWAYS want feature content btw. Phone them up and tell them you're a feature writer and you have content. That's a good start.
