  1. Hook up audio cables

  2. If you just want to hear your favorite tv show on your stereo speakers, then run rca cables from the tv's "audio out" jacks to unused "audio in" jacks on the stereo.  You won't get actual surround sound over rca cables, since they only carry a basic stereo signal, but you will hear your tv shows through your stereo speakers. Some stereos fake surround by playing the stereo signal on the surround speakers.  For actual surround sound, you need to connect to your receiver with a digital cable (optical, coaxial, or hdmi).

  3. maybe you're confuse you wont get surround sound from basic cable channels only premium pay channels like HBO, Cinmax, ect... show movies in Dolby Digital (surround sound) and you wont get that either by connecting rca (white and red cables) by connecting RCA you will getting stereo sound from the front speakers only and with a simulate function in the audio receiver you can get stereo sound from all the speakers.

to get surround sound you will need a digital audio cable can be optical or coaxial from the cable box to the audio receiver and only you will get that sound in the above mention channels.
