My small dog has a potty in the house problem (trying to get that solved too) and I want to get the nasty smell out of the carpet. Btw, yes we clean it up when it happens but there is just that lingering smell I want to fully get rid of.

  1. Get a new rug and put this special kind of spray that the dog will not want to go by. or use pet deodorizer.

  2. Pour one cup of White Vinegar into a half bucket of hot water and sponge on do not allow carpet to become soaking wet, then apply a dry clean white towel to the moistened area and blot up vinegar/water mix, then rinse with clear clean warm water, then blot again with a dry clean towel

Next sponge on Undiluted White Vinegar on the urine stain allow to sit for about one hour again do not saturate carpet with white vinegar, when one hour has elapsed rinse again with warm water do not saturate then apply the dry clean white towel to the moistened area and blot till almost dry

Place another dry clean white towel only on top of the once stained area and leave overnight also place a heavy object on top of towel while vinegar and any wetness is being absorbed Next day remove towel and weighted object from stained area and fluff with your hand or coin to fluff carpet fibers, then sprinkle some Baking Soda on area and leave one day, next day vacuum up thats it your carpet should be clean and fresh and urine odor removed Good Luck !

  3. There's a good chance the carpet pad underneath is soaked.  You'll have to cut out the carpet.....cut on three sides and pull it back.  Feel the pad.  If soaked, it must be replaced.  Also check the floor underneath.  If that is saturated with pee, well then we've got a problem.  You can clean to a point, but often the pee has gotten deeper into the wood than you can clean.  If just plywood subfloor, paint over the stinky wood with Kilz, a encapsulating paint.  If hardwood underneath........that section would have to be replaced.  (personally I'd use the Kilz and say, whoever wants the hardwood floor back can replace the painted section.)

When putting everything back together, use double sided carpet tape to tape the carpeting back into position.  If the carpet is stained beyond recovery, remove that section and find a good patch potential (maybe in the closet floor, under the sofa, etc) and exchange the two pieces.

  4. Steam clean your carpets, there is also a repellent that you can spray on your carpets that will keep the dog off the carpet. Once the dog is trained to go outside you can stop using the spray and the effects will go away.

  5. Just clean the area with full-strength while Vinegar; it may take a couple times.   The vinegar won't effect the coloring in the carpet, so you needn't do all the blotting with towels & things, though it sure wouldn't hurt, even if you did.

  6. Things You’ll Need:

    Black-light Bulb

    Pet-odor-neutralizing Powder With Enzymes

    Vacuum

    Water-extraction carpet-cleaning machine or carpet-shampoo machine

Step1Always clean up pet messes as quickly and thoroughly as possible.

Step2Identify the odiferous areas of your carpet. If you're not sure where they are, darken the room and turn on a black-light bulb to highlight any dried accident spots.

Step3Deep-clean the problem areas using a water-extraction carpet-cleaning machine or a carpet-shampoo machine and cool water only--no chemicals or cleaners. (To rent or buy one of these machines, look under "Carpet and Rug Cleaners' Equipment and Supplies" or a similar heading in the yellow pages.)

Step4Sprinkle an enzyme-containing pet-odor-neutralizing powder (available at pet stores or your vet's office) on the affected areas. Pet-odor-neutralizing powders contain live bacteria and enzymes that digest odor-causing protein and bacteria, permanently removing it from the deepest fibers in your carpet. These products also contain a mild cleanser that can help remove discoloration. Alternatively, you can use borax powder or baking soda, but they are less effective in eliminating stubborn odors.

    Step5Let sit for 8 hours.

  7. I know your pain.  I recently saw in WalMart a product that guarantees the odor will be removed--but I haven't tried it.  I am very familiar with the enzymatic products but they never worked well.  In the end I tore up the carpet.  The problem is the %$#@ pad underneath--it's like a sponge that locks in all the nastiness; the vacuum extractors never fully pull the liquid out of them, so all it does is "wick" back up and reappear as a stain/odor.
