  1. I'll keep the temp in mind if I get to that side of the pond in this month of the year. As in wear some clothes.

You may also isolate the breaker for the unit and trip that till you get to the store for more batteries.

  2. like find the circuit breaker and shut it off if its so simple.  Like go buy some batteries for the remote right now, before  you turn your computer on to read my answer.

  3. Go to where you bought the fan, with your remote. Ask if you could [a] fix your remote or [b] get a new remote. Remember to check the warranty of the remote.

  4. It has to be getting power from somewhere! Unplug it or turn off the circuit breaker for that wall. For now if you can't do that, hang a towel or a piece of cardboard over the front of it.

  5. Log on to fan's (brand) official web site and look up the owner's manual.  I think that all makers are now listing their owner's manual on the web.  If you cannot get your answer you need in the owners manual call the makers toll free number and ask to speak with someone who can trouble shoot the problem.  Gasoline and the time it takes to travel to and from the store where you bought this item is too costly.  You could have your problem resolved over the phone in a few minutes.
