How do i get workmans comp insurance in CA to hire temp employees for fair?

I need workmans comp to hire temporary people to work in my booths in 2 California fairs, the fair does not allow me to hire people without comp insurance. Please help. Thank you

  1. You MUST and should carry insurance.

    You can  hire them thru a temp agency and they will carry the workers compensation insurance.


  2. If the fair requires WC, they are also going to require liability coverage.  Go to the agent who writes your GL policy, and ask them to write comp.

    You're not going to get a temporary policy, though - the agent can explain that.  

    But it won't cost you "extra", anyway.  WC policies have a "minimum premium".  Then they're based on payroll, after that.  So, whether you have the policy for four days, or four months, or a whole year, it's going to cost you the rate times the payroll, or the minimum premium, whichever is HIGHER.

  3. I suggest calling the State Fund to obtain your work comp policy.  I don't know of any agents that would write a policy that is sure to be cancelled mid-term.  You can buy from the State Fund directly.  See link below.
