How do i give my apartment more personality?!!??

HELP!?!?!?

My Husband and I just moved into our cute little apartment but in actual fact feel like we moved into a hospital ward that we just threw furniture into! The walls are an off white, the carpet is tan... and at the moment the apartment feels very cold and lacking in personality.

We started with the basics and both agree we love the dark furniture. I love the bright, happy types of colcolorsd he likes the more neutral colcolorse decided we love the way Green and brown look so we are going off that right now. We also love red.

We were hoping in some decorating ideas or tips on mirrors/candles/accent walls/frames/paintings etc anything that would help us get rid of the hospital feel!

What on earth can we do/add to the apartment to make it look 'lived in" we both agree is has so much personality but being first timers to California we lack the knowledge and resources to complete this little task of ours.

I feel like i have a lot of good ideas but no idea how to put them all together or where to go to make it happen! Any tips or ideas on cheap, economical and effective decorating ideas would be appreciated!

I have included pics! thank you!!!!! =)

when re-decorating home, bedroom or any other room, always try to choose colors according to feng shui. in this case you will activate powers of 5 elements (water, earth, metal, wood and fire) and support all your lucky "areas" - this will attract love, romance, wealth, money, prosperity, luck etc etc

  2. Oh, I love  your furniture.

Okay, in the master bedroom hang curtains. I would get landlords permission. At worst, you will have to take the curtain rod down and patch the holes. Plan accordingly.

In the living room, art will really help. Behind the couch. Maybe a colorful candle on the coffee table. Maybe a basket with some bright fruit on the dining room table as a centerpiece.

You could drape some fabric along the top of the vertical blinds to brighten up and add a bit of color. Some lamps with colorful shades will also help.

I would figure out a color shceme and then shop at thrift stores and all for elements that would add color like mirrors and art. Lamps are easy, sometimes you have to look past the color and look at the shape. If you like the shape, then it is nothing to slap some primer on it and paint it a color you like with spray paint.

  3. My eyes are first drawn to how bare the walls are. You can purchase cheap prints online, or get creative and make your own artwork. Go to Better Homes and Garden's website for great ideas on how to make your own artwork. Mirrors are also a great way to create a spacious feel inside your home, and brighten it up a little.

Accents and accessories are also key. For example, the picture of the red bed. It looks so plain, so spruce it up a little with a fresh accent pillow and pull back the comforter and add some cute sheets. Also, above the bed, add a picture or painting for a more homely feel. Accent rugs are great; bright rectangles of warmth that add color to the room. Put one under the coffee table and beside the bed. Also, add flowy curtains to the windows. Ikea is a great place with tons of budget-wise stuff, and a great place to look when pulling together a room.

Accessories are also a necessity; souvenirs, memories, pictures, little trinkets can decorate the tables and shelves, and accent side tables are also good. Add a splash of color using eye-popping accents.

Hope I helped, and good luck on your home!

  4. You really need to make it look warmer by putting a big rug with color under the coffee table and putting a nice big picture that would go with the rug above the couch.   Put some candles around and get a throw blanket to go across  one end of the sofa.    Plants bring a room to life too.  You need contrast.   Where there is light (add dark) and where there is dark (add light colors)    You will see a big difference after you are done.    You also could use a nice big mirror in the dining room with a brown frame and put some tall color candles in the middle of the table.    Good luck....

  5. Try pictures try going to yard sales, dollar stores and goodwill. I found a lot of neat mirrors and things too on www.craigslist.com! You can also paint just paint it all back when you move! Try throw rugs!

  6. I like red blanket. I think it was a good way to go. Try matching candles for the bed room. It makes the room more romantic and are always handy when the power goes out. If your placing pictures on the walls try to get similar or matching frames. Simple black picture frames are always easy to find and normally easy to afford.

If your looking to go with a red and black theme threw out the apartment you can get a red throw blanket for the couch. Maybe some red pillows too. Curtains are good to keep the sun from waking you in the bed room and a good way to keep glare off the tv. If you don't have allergies try some plants.

If none of these ideas help try http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/decorating/ or the home and garden channel.
