  1. I worked as an Internal Medicine Technician for 5 years, and a Veterinary Technician for 13. I was taught on the job. You can't do that now, but I did get my certification by Grandfathering in in another state. I studied myself with a couple of friends and passed the VTNE in one try. BTW, the VTNE is the same test for every state, with different formats.

The Internist I worked with was one of the most intelligent women I ever met. She was a fabulous diagnostician, and had referrals from all the surrounding states. I learned much more from her than just veterinary medicine. She was my mentor and is still a good friend. She and I both retired from Veterinary Medicine, for different reasons.

Being a Vet Tech was the best thing I ever did. I really did not want to leave, but for health reasons I had to. I loved my job. I was fortunate that I worked with a practice which was very ethical.

For your classes in high school, take Algebra, biology, chemistry. Those are going to be needed.

  2. First, go online and figure out which school sounds right for you.  Call their guidance office, and start asking for..guidance.  Each school is different, and requirements that have to be met vary.  The school I went to is a fully accredited college, and you have to take basic knowledge courses, and balance the curriculum.  Sociology, writing, math, science, etc. are required to get your degree there.  Other schools are based on technology only, and you don't get the full education.

  3. Go work or volunteer at your local vet clinic. From there you can really decide whether you can to become a vet tech. I've worked in a couple of clinics as an assistant and to be a tech. you must be a people person. Sometimes the vet sends in the techs when the job is doable by the techs. Also, as a tech. you need to be able to talk and to communicate to people as well. As a tech. you will do a combination of decision making, medical procedures, psychology, chemistry, blood work procedures, holding, taking blood, taking X-rays, counting drugs etc. In school you must make good grades in and understand biology, chemistry, and mathematics. Overall, your grades must be good or excellent. If you're a slacker, than please consider another profession.

  4. vet techs are like nurses for vets.  what will help is if you start out working at a clinic working ur way up.  it will help if u take chemistry classes, biology classes, and plenty of math classes.  there isnt a whole lot of classes besides math and science classes that u can take in hs.  there are a lot of colleges to go to for vet med.  i dont know what state u live in so i cant make any suggestions on colleges.  just do some research on some of the colleges in ur state to see what colleges offer those programs.  also it may help taking classes at a community college to get your prerequisit classes taken care of but make sure that they will transfer to a college that offers vet med.  but be sure to work in a clinic to make sure that working with animals is really the field u want to get into.  also make sure u know that u may never be able to retire from this field as a vet tech.  i didnt realize that before i spent all the money to go to school to be a vet tech.  i mean i love my job but u also need to think about the long term too.

  5. Isn't there a career adviser at your school? there always the best people to ask....
