Yesterday, i was talking with my dad, who use 2 be in great shape, like twice as good of shape ive ever been. When we moved he got a job that is very time consuming, and hasnt had the motivation 2 work out like i remember him having when i was little.

When i was little i remember he always use 2 tell me he always dreamed of running a marathon with me.

so in an attempt 2 get my dad back in2 the swing of working out i told him that i wanted 2 run a graduation Marathon with him next yr around the time i graduate from highschool.

i am in great physical shape, i lift weights for more than 3 hours a day, and am a competetive athelete.

my question is how should i go about training for this marathon?

  1. Yes I wouldn't suggest you two doing a marathon together.     Maybe you can if that is a dream of yours, but if he isn't into working out much and doesn't have the time a marathon will be a killer for him to attempt to do without the proper training.  Pick a more reasonable distance such as a 10K, it will be easier to train for (roughly get to running 25-30 miles a week) and won't take up to much of your time each week.

  2. That's a very noble idea and certainly shows your compassion/concern for your father's situation.  Given his situation, though, this sounds like you're trying to saddle him with a commitment he may not be able to fulfill based on his work schedule.

Why not try something more subtle like just getting him out to jog with you for half an hour a day?  This don't put any more pressure on him, and still gets you both out together in a healthy way.

To train for a marathon, you just gotta start logging some mileage...
