  1. Learn to do bottom turns first.  Learning to hang ten before you even know how to turn is like trying to run before you learn to walk.

All turning on a longboard is from the tail.  You want your back foot closer to the tail as your pivot point in a bottom turn is where the fins are.  Bottom turns are all about turning on the fin and your rails.  Make sure you turn your board without bending over at the waist.  You want to make sure your center of gravity is always over the board.  Longboard turns are more sweeping turns than snaps like on a shortboard.

As for a hang ten, you'll need to learn how to cross-step before you do that.  DON'T shuffle your feet... not only is this sloppy looking, you have no control of your board when you do this, and you make the board hop up and down.  Before learning how to hang ten, you'll need to learn how to do a cheater's five, and then a hang five.

Watch vids of surfers like Noah Shimbakuro, Joel Tudor, and Alex Knost.  I'd suggest also checking out Skip Fry and friends to see the old school surfing, even though Joel Tudor is about as close as you can get to seeing that from a younger guy.

  2. when you are on the wave, slowly walk to the front and then walk back. it takes a while to nail it but when you do, it's so awesome. to turn, look in the direction you want to turn and your body will adjust the weight and your board will turn! also, it takes some practice.
