Basketball is in my blood. I learn it, love it, and live it. But i have a problem with being under pressure. I always make all my shots when me and friends are just messin around, but on the court its like "Hasta la vista baby!". What kind of drill or activity can i do to improve those "skilz"?

  1. If you make all your shots when you're playing around.. then you're pretty relaxed.

But you wanna learn to make shots ALL THE TIME.. so I'd suggest doing a lot of drills.. from different places on the court.

Just do it till it's almost automatic. After that.. I'd suggest you play games with your friends, and make bets. I know gambling's bad.. but do some other type of bets to learn to play under pressure. Like.. sit up's... or treating out to dinner or lunch.. or anything like that. Little stuff.. just so you feel more competitive and strive to win.

You can also time yourself... how many shots can you get in the court under a minute with a timer.

Basically, it's hard to simulate the pressure you feel at real games, but these alternatives can maybe help.

  2. the other difference you may be overlooking is the type of shot you take when you're jsut messin around with your friends vs the kind you have to take in a game. You need to practice game-type shots at game speed. Then just keep doing it over and over until you can't move your arms!

  3. Shoot a LOT more. Do you realize that most professional basketball players (men and women) shoot their favorite or "trademark" shot several hours per day in the off season. Elvin Hayes, in the NBA Hall of Fame, used to practice his 10 foot turn around jump shot 8 to 10 hours per day. Kareem practiced the "sky hook" (the most effective and devastating offensive shot in history) 6 to 8 hours per day. When I played college basketball I shot 200 free throws each day in the off season, as well as several hours per day on my jump shot and hook shot.

There was a TV commercial on last year that stated "Amateurs do an activity until they do it right; professionals do the activity until they can't do it wrong." Practice, practice, practice.

  4. practice, run and stuff..
