How do i improve my reach when swimming?

  1. When your coach tells you to do a drill try the straight arm drill i dont know if you have ever dont that but its a great drill which helps improve how far you are reaching because it forces to reach to your arms full length.


  2. Your reach and distance per stroke will improve by learning to roll from side to side as you swim.  Contrary to what most people think they "see", a freestyler and backstroker actually roll from side to side and spend most of their time on their side.  The head stays still giving the appearance of being flat on your back/stomach.  Rotate your body from the hips and your arm will extend much farther.  This also is crucial to avoid shoulder injuries.    I make young swimmers practice one arm freestyle drills and breathe to the opposite side, improving their body roll and extension.  It also improves balance and greatly improves the kicking on the side that most people pause while breathing which messes up their stroke and side balance.
