Question:

How do i increase my routers signal range?

I have a room in a house with the rest of my family. The router is a d-link and is downstairs at the bottom left corner of the house. My room is upstairs 10 feet high and I'm about 50-60 feet away from the router. My playstation 3 doesn't get a signal upstairs and i refuse to put it downstairs with that crummy tv from 1990. Does anyone know how to boost signal strength on a wireless router? or maybe suggest a router that can reach my room?

  1. I would start by reviewing the general wireless tips at link 1 below.

If money is no object, purchase a 'N' spec wireless router that will transmit the signal further throughout the house.  Linksys, Netgear, D-Link, etc. would be good routers to choose from.

  2. You will have to move the router to a more centralized location in the house.  If you put it upstairs, you will get better coverage, generally.  If you move it to a closet in the middle of the house it will reach all of the corners.  Right now, you are broadcasting half of the signal outside the house.

This means you will have to find a place that has power and cable TV (or phone for DSL) in the same location.

Get a directional antenna.  These aim the signal in a cone-shaped pattern which focuses it where you want it, not in the back yard.

    Range boosters are worthless.

  3. set it to the hightest channel for signal... and make sure the range in the config setting is at maximum

  4. Some routers are more powerful than others. You can also try a signal booster or repeater.

Here is a link to some antennas that might help.
