  1. To change file type icons

    1. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Appearance and Themes, and then click Folder Options.

2.In the Folder Options dialog box, click the File Types tab.

3.Select the file type you wish to change (Like: .ZIP), and then click Advanced.

4.In the Edit File Type dialog box, click Change Icon.

5.In the Change Icon dialog box, click Browse, and navigate to the new icon you want to use, select it, and then click Open.

6.Click OK, and then click Close.

You could also just refresh the icon cache by deleting the IconCache.db file from your profile directory (usually C:/Documents and Settings/Username/LocalSettings/Applicat... Data). It will be automatically recreated.

Sometimes when you change icons you need to clear the iconcache before it shows up ...

Changing the icon of a shortcut is very simple , just right-click on it and select Properties from menu , thereby switch to the Shortcut tab and click on the Change Icon button . Remember that the icon you are selecting for the shortcut is in .ico format.
