Currently there is carpet on the stairs, under the carpet is the wood stairs that have the rounded nose that is made for the carpet.

I am looking to install a hardwood floor instead of the carpet.

I am thinking about buying this: http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&productId=100608182

but my question is:

do i take out the wood floor under the carpet and then put these on, or do i put these on top of the floor.

and how do i secure it: Glue? nails? screws? a bracket?

a guide would be greatly appreciated...but just some info is good too.

  1. from the bottom up?

  2. you probably should take it off.. you'll be left with the bare part of the stairs which is needed to put the steps on. You'd hammer it in with nails. I tried to find a picture..but this was all i could come up with =)

( in the picture, the light brown part would be the part you'd take off..the dark brown part, would be the part that is left for you to put the new boards on)
