I am currently in year 10 choosing my subjects for the HSC and planning my future career.

My subjects are:

Advance Maths

Advance English

Hospitality(cooking etc)

once i finished year 12 i was planning on doing a gap year for the armed forces to fill in a year until i have my full license and can apply to the AFP.

i was wondering if this was the wrong way to go about it?

should i choose different subjects?

do a university policing coarse once i finish school?

what is the best way to go about joining the AFP as it is pre much my dream job and would love to one day join.

Thanks,

  1. check out

    http://www.afp.gov.au

Tells you everything you need to know in the careers section.

  2. So long as you have a clear driving and criminal record, are physically fit and get a good UAI you should be eligible to apply for the AFP.

Be aware the AFP generally has two application 'streams', one for national operations (investigations, the suit wearing guys) and uniformed "state policing" with the Australian Capital Territory.

The ADF gap year is a good idea and a good way to build fitness and confidence and get some life experience. It's also a good way to fil in a year and earn some money instead of working in a Maccas or supermarket etc while you're waiting to get your full drivers licence.

Doing a university degree in a policing related field is also something the AFP and other State Police Forces look for but not always necessary. Just make sure you choose a decent one and related to a field you're actually interested in...as 3-5 years of study in something that isn't interesting will be a struggle.
