Okey so i just baught a new kawi vulcan 500. I parked underneath a tree and a short while later it had dust and specks of stuff on it. I baught a soft rag and was wiping it off, but some how that left scratches in a few places.( i think they are called microscratches) Any way i want to know what products i should buy and what the best way to prevent scratches to the gas tank and chrome. or how to get rid of them.

  1. Buy a mild polishing compound and then a good wax ( TR3 or Turtle wax. Rub, rub rub by hand. Careful if u buff with a wheel with polishing compound or you ll go through the paint. Buy a simple 1/2 cover for bike, remember easy on easy off or it turns into a hassle. Keep it out of the weather when it is parked. OK in weather on trips etc. Protect it, wash and wax, and chrome polish. Never let any other person ride it. You paid for yours they pay for theirs....... Period.

  2. It is natural to be protective about your new bike.  Even after many years, when I still buy a new bike, I still feel extra protective towards it; for the first 6 months atleast.

Please understand, once the bike leaves the showroom, it will never be in the same condition.  It will only add scratches, discoloration, dirt and so on.  That is reality for you.  Accept it.  However, having said that, you can certainly do your bit to slow down this process and prevent unnecessary wear and tear.

A liquid wax, a soft cloth and lots of love and care.  When washing your bike, keep it in the shade to dry, never in the blazing sun.  Once dry, you can smear a coat of wax on all metal parts including chrome, glass and metal.  Let it dry.  It will all look white.  Don't panic.  It is only temporary.  Then start buffing with a clean soft cloth.  Your wax will give an invisible skin to your bike which will seal the inside and keep the dirt and elements at bay.  When bike is dirty, just wipe.

  3. Tree have this thing cal sap, not very friendly to new paint.  You can wash and polish it with fine buffing compound and wax it with something like turtle wax.

Personally, I would just enjoy the bike and never mine the scratches.    The more you are into the scratch, the more you'll notice there would be all kind of scratches.  You won't want to ride the bike.

Congrad on your purchase and enjoy your ride!
