i just put new strings on my violin, and it will NOT stay in tune. it's been about 2 weeks now and i've tried every day and they will not stretch. i've been playing about 15 years, then it's been about 5 since i've played. but i've only strung it myself once.

i have no access to any kind of wax of lubricant or anything like that. it won't even stay in tune for a second!

  1. You need to make sure the violin is strung up properly, with the correct string in the correct peg, and the string wound against the side of the peg box.  Then you need some peg drops.  See:

  2. Previous answers are good and should be followed.

For a Slipping peg. Remove the peg and rub chalk on the areas of the peg that come in contact with the peg box. Don't be afraid to use lots of chalk.  If the peg is very shiny where it touches the Peg box, you can scrape the shiny part lightly with a knife. Just enough to take the gloss off.

That is a good sub for peg drops or peg dope.

The pencil lead or graphite is a lubricant. Do not use it on pegs that are already slipping.

  3. try just putting some pencil lead around the pegs.
