  1. i am the same as you and love accounting. WIth regards to the time thing it can be up to you the amount of time that you put in. I work for an international engineering company and there are people in our department who work two days a week and look after the kids and there are people who work 60 hrs a week.

If you get a good company often they will let you be quite flexible with your hours and it is possible to do some of the work for home. To be an accountant you do need to be qualified so i suggest going and sitting in on some lectures to see if it does interest you.

  2. if you really like it go for it then

i'm in the same dilemma as you are

i used to be a straight A's student in science but now i'm in accounting

and according to an accountant that i know, they dont get paid much anyway

its for those who really have a passion for it

hopefully i'd be able to get into the ACCA someday

  3. Take intermediate acocunting, that seperates the serious accounting students from the not so serious students. Not everyone works crazy hours, it depends on if you want to advance your career. However every accounting job I have had required overtime during peak periods.

  4. Depends on what your aspirations are. Are you wanting to work for a large corporation or a small firm? I work in a small firm and the ONLY time I pull in more than 40 hours is at tax time. You don't have to work in taxes if you don't want to, there are different types of accounting to get into.

One thing to think about. Doctors work crazy hours, so what are you going to do while she is at work? You could always work while she is gone. You could even do some financial accounting from home for small businesses.

Oh and accountants can bring in decent money. Granted we don't make as much as CPA's but I am making $20 an hour and my hubby (who has been an accountant much longer) is making $30 an hour. Not too shabby for our area.
