How do i know how strong my speakers are in my Toshiba satellite pro A210?

I want to build a custom docking station for it with built in speakers and want to have something to compare them to,

What do you think the minimum specs on the speakers should be

  1. Take them to the gym and see how much they can bench press!


  2. Check the back of the speakers for a tiny sticker which should tell you the ohm rating, the decibel rating and the watts.

    For example it will say 92db, 8ohms, 100 watts, which means the speaker reaches 92 decibels with one watt of power, it is running at 8 ohms (which is pretty much standard) and is limited to 100 watts of amplifier power.

    Now say you hook it up to a reciever that is rated at 130 watts per channel, don't worry about, it is very very rare that a speaker will ever reciever that much power, and it is always better to have more amplifier power then too little power.

    I would also look at the owners manual (sounds like those speakers are from a home theater in a box system) and the manual should have the speaker ratings on them.  Just be warned it is never a good idea to hook up HTIB speakers to a regular full power amp or reciever, because most HTIB are only like 30-50 watts and cannot handle a full frequency spectrum, where a HTIB system is setup to send the lower bass frequencies to the passive subwoofer.
