How do i know if I need a tuner for a dvd recorder.?

I do not have cable or anything and i have no idea what it is all about.

  1. Well, you need a tuner if you are wanting to record TV shows off of cable or an antenna.

    If you don't want to do either of those things, you won't need a tuner in your DVD recorder.

    You should know that if you buy one with a digital tuner (analog broadcasts are ending in Feb 2009), that the HDTV shows will be recorded at lower resolution than when it is live because DVDs are limited in the resolution they support.  This is known as downscaling.
