How do i know if a negative hpt is false?

i was supposed to get my period yesterday, so about 5 pm i took a hpt it came out so light that it can hardly be seen.I wonder if it could be a false negative?.Please help. Thanks

You will never know until you finally get a BFP, or you start to notice other sysmptoms and go get a blood test (there is a VERY SMALL percentage of women for which HPTs just don't work, their kidneys apparently never filter enough hcg into their urine).

Obviously you might be late because you're pregnant, but it's also possible you're just having a late period (ovulation was delayed for some reason, like stress, even minor stress you didn't notice).

take another tomorrow morning with your first morning urine.  Early in, you need to have a highly concentrated urine for the test to detect hormones.  If you can't wait until tomorrow, stop drinking water for a couple hours and don't pee... after about 4 hours you may have a high enough concentration in your urine to give it a shot!  You do NOT want to be well hydrated to take these tests - that dilutes your urine too much for a solid reading.
