Hello... I have a female great dane that is 11 months old today and she went into her first heat exactly 1 month ago and we have another great dane that is 6 years old and they were left together sometimes on accident and we did catch him mating with her but not sure if he actually got to do it business if you catch my drift. But i have read that you can tell by her nipples being large and turn a dark pink but my female is all black and so are her nipples and also her area is still swollen and she is very lazy more then she normally is she lays in the same spot 90% of the day she use to love going outside but now she could really care less. i know i should take her to the vet but she is a very skittish dog and it's hard to take her places. So if there is any advice you could give me that would be great and this is also our first female dog. Thank you.

  1. Heat usually lasts three weeks, so if it's been a month since the start of her first heat she probably ISN'T pregnant. Just to be sure i would take her to the vet - she needs to go, period. Call the vet and see when the earliest time is that he can determine pregnancy, then bring her in.

There's no way around that. She's also going to need to go two other times if you decide to let her have the pups - once to confirm number and once to confirm size (second visit would be closer to due date.)

I would seriously consider getting her spayed ASAP. She's too young and immature to carry and whelp a litter, plus you'll need to invest quite a bit of money and time into this. Try four weeks off of work for birth and care of pups as well as a couple grand or more.

Add - Do NOT try to "feel the pups." Only vets and experienced breeders should do that - a novice could easily hurt the forming puppies.

  2. Feel her belly - you should be able to start feeling the puppies soon.

  3. Well, I would say, yes your Female is probably pregnant.

that was not an accident, you knew your female was in heat they should not of been left together at all. She is way to young to have puppies. Take her to the vet to make sure that she is going to be ok.

  4. Take your female to your Vet.  Have her spayed as soon as he/she thinks it is safe.

You don't have enough knowledge to be breeding dogs.

  5. She propbmely is...but u should bring her to a vet to make sure....and see whaty to do...like with the male and everything.......Good Luck

  6. Yep she is most likely pregnant

  7. She may or may not be pregnant, only the vet can tell you for sure.

She is far too young to be having puppies, and dogs with temperament issues, such as "skittishness" should NEVER be bred.

    Please have her spayed immediately.

  8. Take her to a vet, asap!!! If she is pregnant, you'll need to start preparing a whelping area and saving up your money! Whelping a litter is so time consuming and expensive!!!

  9. if she has nipples

  10. Skittish or not....

She NEEDS to see a vet. She is WAY too young to be having puppies, and having them could put her and the puppies in danger.

The best thing for her is to take her in for an emergency spay.

While you're there, get your male neutered so you're not responsible for any "oops" litters.
