  1. lower numbers are usually for further distances but it realy all depends on the person. I CANNOT hit with any irons except my 9 so thats what i use for long. For shorter i use my pitching wedge.

  2. You need to go to a driving range and figure out how far you can carry each club in your bag.  There is no universal answer because everyone swings differently.  Generally though a pitching wedge 110 yards, 9 - 130, 8 - 140, 7 - 150, 6 - 160, 5 - 175, 4 - 190, 3 - 200.  Then you still have to determine on each shot if it is uphill or downhill and if the wind is helping or hurting etc.  But first step is go to the range and see what your average is with each club.

  3. Distances are different for different people. You should find out what iron to use for 150 yards and work from there. Figure about 10 yards difference for each club. So if your 7 iron goes 150 yards then the 6 should go about 160 and so on.

Only you can determine the distance of your clubs.

  4. Go to a reliable range and hit each club 7-8 times, and they should all go fairly the same distance. Most ranges have markers for 100 yards, 150, and so on. Just make a educated guess if you're not exactly on the mark. If you don't quite understand that, you can always assume you'll hit within 10-20 yards between clubs. It's important to know your distances, obviously, so you'll know what to hit when.

  5. Well.....First it depends how far you can hit your irons. I'll tell you based on the irons i have (5,7,9 & Pitching Wedge). I use the 5 iron when Im really far away from the green. 7 when im not that close and 9 when im close to the green. The Pitching Wedge I use if im like a meter away from the green but you can also use it in the sand traps. Sometimes I can hit the 7 farther than the 5. The Higher the number the shorter the club, the shorter the distance. The Lower the Number the longer the club and the farther it may go.

    Glad I could help

  6. This is why you go to the driving range.  You hit shots with different clubs and see how far they go.  You will hit a regular ball farther than a range ball(10-20 yards with an iron, 20-40 yards with a driver/fairway wood).  You have to know how far you hit each club in order to play and score as well as possible.

  7. I will give an advanced answer for a beginner question. Everything that everyone else has said is correct each club has different loft and will fly different distances based on ability. Yet the a good golfer can hit every club any distance they chose in any given situation.

They change swing speed and alter loft to produce the shot they desire not just a default shot.

A prerequisite is to understand how to hit 85% standard shots though because these are the shots you hit most often.

  8. Distances on any club are based on your particular ability to make good contact.  some folks can hit a 9 Iron 150 yds   some need to hit 3wd for the same distance.  Only your experience can tell you what to hit from where for your particular game

  9. The yardages listed in the chart below show a range for average amateurs. As you'll see, the ranges are quite large, and represent short hitters, mid hitters and long hitters. (There are, of course, people who hit it longer, just as there are people who hit it shorter.)

    Club Yards

    Driver 200-230-260

    3-wood 180-215-235

    5-wood 170-195-210

    2-iron 170-195-210

    3-iron 160-180-200

    4-iron 150-170-185

    5-iron 140-160-170

    6-iron 130-150-160

    7-iron 120-140-150

    8-iron 110-130-140

    9-iron 95-115-130

    PW 80-105-120

    SW 60-80-100

  10. practice and experience. as u play more you'll know how you hit your clubs. and whether uphill/downhill, wind, weather, will effect anything. just goto the range and hit thru your clubs, and write down their distances. then use whichever is close when u play, and also note if it was long/short, since range balls typically don't fly as far as reg balls.
