Im 13 and on a swim team and a lot of times i get asked what kind of stroke i swim. I know some people and they say they are a butterfly swimmer or a freestyle swimmer etc but i want to know how they figure it out. Is it which one you swim the fastest or the best form you have? A really detailed explanation would really help! Thanks!

  1. It's the stroke that you are fastest in, have the best form, maybe what you like and what you are comfortable with.

I mean, of course my freestyle is fastest as far as time, but in comparison to state times, other people etc I am a backstroker or a fly swimmer. Also because I find swimming those strokes come easy and I've been told I have good technique, but none of that applies to my breaststroke. Does that make sense? Sort of?

You could ask your coach or other people what they think if you really want to find out. You also may just be good all around, or don't have a specific stroke that you are best at. Which is cool... individual medley advantage (:

  2. I am a distance freestyle swimmer.

When I was 14 years old, my coach entered me into the 500 freestyle without my consent. So I had no choice but to swim it. When I finished, I had made the state cut....The first time I had ever swam the event. I was best at freestyle and eventually fell in love with distance freestyle (the 800 meter was my favorite).

Just find what you are best and or what event you enjoy doing most. Have fun :)

  3. If you could post your times it would help other people help you determine what kind of swimmer you are.

You're right though. It does have a lot to do with which events are your fastest, but it can depend on what kind of form you have. For instance, I was a freestyler and a backstroker when I was younger but since my butterfly form was always better, eventually it turned out to be my second stroke (freestyle has always been my first).

Look at all your times. Compare them to the USA Swimming time standards:

The ones that are closer to A and above times (AA, AAA, and so on) indicate your stroke.

  4. jumpnin pool with concrete blocks tied to ankles, if you survive you are a good swimmer

  5. To me I take it as the one I swim best times with...BUT that's also my favorite. For example my times suck on backstroke and I hate it...so that's not my stroke. My times are really good on free and breast and Iove both.  So from there  I take my stroke quality and my stroke quality is better on my breststroke so BRESTSTROKE is MY Swim.  I hope that helps you!!

  6. Well I am going to be 14 and i swim to. I have been swimming practicly my whole life but just a year and a half ago joined the swim team and I wondered the same thing for a while and after placing well in a stroke and if you like it your stroke is prbly that stroke that you do the best in. I hope that helped.:)
