How do i know when a honey dew melon is ripe(ready)

1. smell it, it should give off a slight aroma, and it should yield slightly when ripe.

2. thumping does not work.

3. when ripe should have a waxy feel to it.

4. do not cut if hard or unripe, it will taste awful...good luck!

It will have a deep sonorous ring to it, when struck with a hammer.

I usually smell it where the stem connected to the melon.  If it smells kinda sweet then its ready.  If it still smells green (earthy smelling) its not ready

Possibly when it's draped on a Chaise Lounge purring like Eartha Kitt

and giving you the "Come to bed eyes".

Only joking, they should give off a faint Melon smell, and feel firm, but with a touch of give. You should be able to push your thumb through it.
