How do i know when my boxturtles are mating?

  1. The male will mount the female from behind (this is the reason the males plastron, bottom part of shell, is curved inward, so he doesn't fall off). Sometimes there will be low grunting sounds.


  2. Some trutles are very aggressive maters. When the male mounts the female he often will try to bite her head and front legs. Some turtles will mount the female. In Others the male locks his feet inside the females shell and begins copulating. At this point he flips over in his back. It really depends on the species of turtle.
