  1. Okay one you really don't want to play the same note over and over again that will get old and repetative quick. The best thing to do is to stay in key. If you're playing with somebody find out what key there in (you must know your musical alphabet A,A#,B,C,C#,D,Eb,E,F,F#,G,G#)  now if you know your keys learn a scale i recommend the major and minor pentatonic scales which you can find at www.chordbook.com. Learn the tonic of the scales usaually its the first note you play on the scale. So if you learn the it in the key of  A just move the tonic down two frets to the key of B and the scale will be in the key of B. THis will help your improvising and eventually build you an ear

Hope that helps feel free to contact me if you have more questions

  2. Just play where every you want. It makes it more exciting

Any good tutorial book will teach you the basics of playing guitar - I've played keyboards for almost 30 years ! (self-taught !)
