  1. I like the first answer, also remember back in art school,  your complimentary colors:

    Red :: Green

    Orange :: Blue

    Yellow :: Violet

    It's not ALWAYS so, but if a drink is one of these colors, your garnish could be the complimentary color.

    For example:

    Appletini :: Cherry (if apple slices aren't available)

    French Martini :: Lemon Curl

    Blue Motorcycle :: Orange Slice

    Also, cream based drinks are usually garnished with a cherry unless a specialty garnish is available (something like shaved chocolate or espresso beans.)

  2. Tropical get a pineapple and cherry flag. Stab the cherry then the pineapple with a pine.

    Citrus garnishes are generally great for cocktails that do not contain milk or cream

    Tomato-based cocktails are generally garnished with limes, lemons and celery stalks

    Vodka-based cocktails tend to pair well with lemon and lime flavors, tequila and rum pair well with limes, rum can pair well with mint, chocolate pairs with creme de cacao liqueur, and coffee beans complement coffee liqueur.

    Good Luck on the new job!

  3. I agree with everything Beat said.... but also remember that unless it's a cocktail that calls for a garnish don't put one on unless someone specifically asks for it.... especially if it's straight drinks like whisky's/coke... whiskey/water.... rum/coke... you get my drift? Most people will ask for a garnish in those types of drinks if they want them... otherwise the general rule is to only put garnishes in drinks that have fruit juice, liqouers, or fruit flavored alcohol... and the tomato and clamato.

    And lots of people are very particular about there alcohol...lol... some are almost ritualistic.

    Don't worry about it to hard though... if you tell them that your not very experienced they usually go very easy on you and will even help you out.
