i am laying a patio over half my garden, i have put in a retaining wall (made of concrete) and i am now ready to lay the slabs, do you have any tips, advice and "must do's" when i am going through the process, also how deep shall i go down when i take off the layer of grass? all help gratefully received,

ps i was a skilled tradesman years ago and am very good with my hands, but i always steered clear of the hard graft when i was on the building sites!

  1. Try some of the sites on this page.

    http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=h...

  2. Dig down about 4", making sure the ground is level, wacker plate builders sand into the hole, lay the slabls on top, job done!!!

    Ps. hope this helps

  3. its hard to say how deep to set your slabs, how big are the slabs you are wanting to put down?

generally you dig prolly about 3 to 4 inches then put down  some round up just incase nothing grows up and then lay some sand down.

lay your slabs ontop of the sand where ever your desired positions are. then take your hose and water all the cracks of the slabs.

this will kinda help the sand bind with the dirt underneath and the slabs themselves.

  4. First, make a level surface to put the stone down on so that you have a flat patio to enjoy.

As to how deep you should ptu the stone into the ground, it really depends on how thick the stone is in the first place.  A safe barometer is at least 3/4ths the thickness of the stone should be in the ground.

Enjoy building your patio and enjoy using it even more!

  5. Click on the site below and then "Site Index"

This should give you stacks of info on the different types of materials/flags etc.. you're laying

  6. I'm for the easy way...why dig out the grass? Lay the weed-proof black paper down and sand on top to level the blocks. This is hard enough work without adding the back-breaking job of digging out grass!

  7. make sure someone is buried underneath it first
