  3. Each golfer hits their clubs different distances.  If you're working at a club, here's what you need to know:

-The layout of the course; if you're working at a private club, most likely you're a bag-toter.  If you're working at a resort (or a private club that gets a lot of guest play), you need to know each hole; where you want to be, where is bad, what's dead.  From the tee, you need to know how far the bunkers, water hazards, etc. are from that spot.

-Yardages, not sort-ofs, not arounds...from anywhere on the course, you need to tell your golfer "it's X yards to the front, Y to the hole, Z to the back, and XX to carry (hazard, water, whatever).

-Golf etiquette is a must.  There are numerous books you can read about this.

-Be in good shape; you're probably carrying a 30-40 pound bag on your shoulder while walking 5-7 miles during a typical round.

-Ability to read greens; what is the slope...will the ball break left, right, or both?  How severe is the slope?

-Knowing when to keep your mouth shut; ultimately, the golfer is right.  Not the easiest thing to do when they're pissed, but it's part of the deal.

  4. You will not need to learn the x's and o's of golf to be a good caddy.  Learn the etiquette first and foremost.  As long as you dont get in anyones way, you're quiet, you do all of the necessary things such as providing accurate yardages, keeping the clubs clean, keeping the ball clean on the green, etc, etc, you will do fine.  Most players will not expect you to be a golf expert and provide fantastic golf tips.  Remember these 3 things, show up, keep up, shut up.  Good Luck.
