How do i link up an ordinary computer with a modem to an adsl modem?

my computer has an ordinary modem and can link up to a dial up connection but i also have an adsl modem that works of another computer how or what do i need to link my computer to the adsl modem so my computer can work of it

  1. Chances are, unless your computer with the dial-up modem is really old, it will already have a network interface card (NIC). If it does not, they are in fact inexpensive (look for a 10/100 Mbs card compatible with the type of available slots in your PC).

    If you intend on having both computers connected at the same time, an ethernet router and/or switch will be required. The router provides "internal" private IP addresses to your connected PC's using DHCP (if you set up your PC's that way). If you don't need wireless capabilities, a router can be had for under 40 bucks.

    To connect your two PC's to the router/switch, you'll need ethernet patch cables. They come in various lengths and will be Cat5, Cat5e or Cat6-type, any of which will work for your application. You should already have one, which connects your current PC to the ADSL modem, and can still be used. So, you'll need two more.
