  1. First, you will need an HD antenna. There are many kinds and many ways to install them. Before I got my HD channels through Direct TV, I installed one in my attic and it worked perfectly. I haven't tried the ones that you just put on top of your entertainment center (they look like the old rabbit ears but they are Digital HD antennas).

After hooking up the antenna, go into your TV's menu to program the channels. You can usually find this in the Setup option in the menu. There should be a way to Auto Program. This will put the TV into a search mode where it will search through all the possible channels and store the ones that have a good signal.

After the Auto Program is done, you should be able to view any digital channels the are available with the antenna you choose. Remember, the better the antenna, the better it will work. Try Radio Shack.

  2. All TVs with digital tuners have an option in their menus to search for digital channels. So look the the TVs menu or owners manual and figure out how to do it.

Now the bad news. The programs on the new digital channels are the same as the old analog ones, plus a few extra similar ones. I now get four PBS channels instead of one. Plus an extra pretty useless network.

If you are in North America, digital TV broadcasts use the same antennas as the old analog ones. Ignore any BS artists that claim that you need a "HD" "Digital" antenna, or what ever the latest marketing buzz word is.

  3. Make certain that the TV you bought has an HD tuner in it.  If it does, then there is probably a menu or a remote feature that lets you change from analog (regular TV) to digital (HD) tuning.

You will still need to hook up your antenna to you new TV.
