How do i lower the gear ratio on my yz400f first gear is to hi and i would like to lower it

  1. Add a tooth or two to the rear sprocket.


  2. change the gearing until you have it suited to how your ride.

    going up teeth on the back will bring your top speed down but your acceleration up and going down teeth on the back will will bring your top speed up and your acceleration down (Opposite for front sprocket, more teeth on the front will increase your top speed and lower your acceleration), 1 or 2 teeth is a lot of difference. On your big thumper try not to go to low, unless you want to turn it into a tractor.

  3. Easier and cheaper to just change your sprockets. Try going up 1-2 teeth on the rear, you'll just lose a little top end speed.

  4. Easiest would be to change the sprockets.  Going down 1 or 2 teeth in the rear will make the bike seem snappier but you will loose top speed.  Then again, few of us tool around at top speed anyways.  You may have to adjust the speedo.
