Try this:  Get a plastic colander that has an mostly oval shape.  Yes, a colander--the sort of thing you would use to drain pasta in the kitchen.  A plastic bowl might also work, as long as it is not too round/deep to make a realistic bump. Use plastic, because it is lighter weight, not to mention cheaper.

Cover the colander (or at least the edges) with something to make it more comfortable to wear.  Tie it around you with string or cloth.

If you wear maternity clothes over the result, it will look pretty realistic.
