How about a different idea - approach your current boss and say you're under-employed and would like the company to send you on a training course to learn ................  well, whatever you're interested in.  That way, expensive training is paid for by the company, you impress your boss, you gain extra skills and put yourself in a stronger position to move up the employment ladder.

If your free time is because you're working part-time and you want to fill in the rest of your day, then that's a different issue.
