I know they are shy to begain with, but other than getting used to his habitat,,,, are there any other tricks to get him out of his shell?

  1. Good question, I suggest to give him food by your finger, or let the food there and sit until he eats it, that way he'll feel more comfortable.

  2. All I can think of is giving him a treat every time he pokes his head out.  It might take a while, but he can probably learn that every time you tap gently on his shell he's going to get something delicious.

I think that's how all animals can be taught to do something; to reward the behavior that you want.  Since "praise" is out of the question, I think you're left with food as the only bargaining chip.

You might not want to leave the treat for him to eat later, but rather give it to him only when he comes out of his shell.  Otherwise, you'll just be teaching him that if he stays in his shell he'll get the treat anyway.
