Question:

How do i make my lawn mower faster?

I have a Bolens lawn tractor that I drive around the house with a wagon and putter around with and I would like to make it faster cheap. I have looked it up but it is not a very popular tractor.

The tractor has a 12.5 B&S motor and a 5 speed transmission. With belt drive from the motor to the transmission. Which from my understanding would work. The pulley in the front seems to be smaller than the one in the back and I was wondering it it would be possible to switch them instead of buying brand new.

I went to the local hardware store and they said that they might have one to fit but i was going to have to bring in the old one which i dont want to tear the mower apart before i know it will be able to fix it.

Please help me and i will try to help you. Thank You!

  1. bore the cylinders and oversize the pistons and run airplane fuel ;)  LOL

  2. I don't think that you will be able to switch the pulleys.  They have different size holes.  The other thing would be that putting the large pulley on the engine and the small one on the rear would increase the speed if the engine had enough power.  I would look for a larger front pulley or a smaller rear one.  Look for old mowers on craigs list.  Removing the pulley from the engine is easy, it has a bolt that threads into the crankshaft.  The one on the rear is tougher, at least to get to.  You would probably have to take the transaxle out of the tractor.
