  1. The best way, I think, to make a theoretical topic like science and society into a funny, engaging speech is probably to come up with specific examples to which people can easily relate.  For example, you could point out how DNA testing has affected the Jerry Springer Show, just as one idea.

  2. move into the audience causing the eyes to follow you. Make eye contact with different people in a lingering intentional way. Also, when using hand gestures, be sure the hands are perpendicular to the ground and parallel to one another (like you are about to clap) and never stretched out like a stop or flat down.

If you are at the lecturn/podium and want to stress something very important, remove your glasses, say a sentence of importance, then replace them.

If you do not have glasses, "pyramid" your hands. Just what it sounds like. Touch index fingers together and thumbs together to appear to have a triangle shape.

Never put your hands up to your mouth - this is the appearance of deception. Well, unless you wish to appear mysterious.

I just did a Masters thesis on body language and you will be amazed at how these little things can change the tone of a room.

  3. involve and relate to people

  4. Take a deep breath when you wanna start the speech, have confidence in yourself, Make eye contact, if you get nervous don't worry just imagine the students or the people listening like they are a bunch of small people and your so much bigger and better than them. Smile and don't talk to fast, stand up straight and drink water before, practice your speech before in front of a mirror and also know what your talking about...have knowledge about it because that is definitely a confidence booster

  5. Start out with a joke when introducing yourself and speak slowly, not ridiculous slow but not so fast it sounds like you are trying to head for the bathroom after.

Write down on a piece of paper what you really want them to know at the end of your speech.

For example: when they leave I want them to know what DNA is; how it has effected humans from the time it was discovered to the present; it is good and it is bad for these reasons; conclude with how it will impact our future.

During the speech just remember that it is natural to fear public speaking and they are not studying your fault as long as you speak slowly and verbalize your message.  Don't be afraid to joke yourself, some of the best speakers I have seen are so confident and still know how to please the audience even when messing up their speech.  It is like tripping and laughing at yourself.  People respect that.
