  1. No.

In the same way as you can't make a DVD player play video tapes or get colour pictures on a black and white television...

  2. no possible way as you tv will not have the required contrast to go in to the HD relm so start saveing and buy one then buy a digital servise to supply you with HD

  3. Sorry, this is not possible.  Standard TVs can only display "standard definition" signals (480p).  In order to receive and display HD signals (720p or 1080p), your set has to have the capability built into it from the factory.

  4. Not possible to convert standard tv sets to HD because the screen technology and scanning circuits are too different, sorry.

You can make it possible to receive digital Standard Definition television though. All you have to do is to buy a Freeview box.

If your television set has a SCART socket you will be able to plug in a cheap Freeview box (about £18 or so from almost anywhere, including Tesco).

This will not give you HD TV but it will enable you to watch about 40 digital tv channels in ordinary 625-line resolution, like you have at the moment.

When the digital changeover is complete in your area you will be "safe". It will be decades before Standard definition tv is fully replaced by High Definition so you won't need to replace the set for the forseeable future.

If your television doesn't have a SCART then buy a Freeview box that also outputs its signal via the aerial connector. It will probably be on channel 36 or 38 and you just get your tv set to  tune in the same way as you probably did for your old VHS video machine.

These cost from about £25, because they contain a UHF modulator; but you will have to ask a knowlegable shop assistant which boxes have the UHF modulator.

Most Tesco employees and many Curry's ones won't have a clue what you're talking about. You should go to John Lewis (where they train their staff) or a specialist expert shop for that.
