How do i make my xbox 360 headset work?

Question

Man, i have tried everything to make this headset work. Iv tried cleaning it with a cotton swab, iv tried checking if everything was ok in the personal settings. I checked if the mute switch wasnt switched off. I even tried recording my voice. My diagnosis for my headset is, i think its broken. *Note I play halo 3, when i talk in the game, the little mic next to my name shows up and waves appear around it.

My other diagnosis is i think the people on there don`t like to talk.

Please have the kindness to help me out please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!... :/
