In order to activate mystery events on Pokemon ruby and sapphire, you must first ensure that your main menu has the option called Mystery events. If it does, then unlock it.

A mystery event in Pokemon ruby and sapphire is just what its name suggests- mysterious events. Once you join the Mystery Event Club then you will be able to scan a battle e-card in order to face an opponent. The unusual thing about this is that with promo cards in the game, after you beat the trainer then nothing will happen. You will not even get any money or experience points. In addition after you defeat the trainer, you will find that your pokemon is fully restored. It will almost function as if it were a player to player battle.
