  1. Take a gallon glass jar and fill almost full of water.  Put tea bags into the jar (how many will depend on how strong you like your tea and/or how long you leave it in the sun).  Start with 4-5 regular tea bags and experiment from there.  Let it sit in the sun for a few hours and check it for color and flavor and see if you like it.  If not let it sit longer or add more tea bags.  Sweeten afterwards to your own taste.

  2. Sun Tea Recipe

    Method

Put 4 to 6 tea bags into a clean 2 quart glass container. Fill with water and cap. Place outside where the sunlight can strike the container for about 3 to 5 hours. Move the container if necessary to keep it in the sun. When the tea has reached its desired strength, remove from sun and put it in the refrigerator. You may or may not want to remove the tea bags at this point. I usually don't.

The tea will probably taste more mellow than what you are used to from using boiling water. The slow seeping has a way of bringing out a slightly different flavor from the tea. Also, because you didn't use boiling water, you should refrigerate the tea and drink it up pretty quickly - a day or two. It will not keep as well as iced tea made from boiling water.

I usually make sun tea with various forms of herbal tea. Sometimes you can put in a few sprigs of fresh mint as well.

    Steps

Put tea bags of your choice and a corresponding number of teaspoons of sweetener into the jug.

Pour in cups of water according to the number of servings you're making.

    s***w on the cap.

    Shake well.

Place the jug in a sunny spot.

Wait a few hours, then shake some more. The color should be like a normal cup of tea: dark with black tea, lighter with green.

Optional: Put the jug in the fridge to chill before drinking.

    Shake once more before drinking.

    Pour into a glass.

    Add ice to taste.

    Tips

Pour some prepared Sun Tea into an ice cube tray, and when the cubes are ready, use them to chill the tea in your glass.

Use a larger jug than you need. The extra space allows room for shaking up the mixture to get a more even distribution of ingredients.

    Warnings

It tastes best within three days of preparation.

Sun tea steeps at an ideal temperature for bacterial growth. If you see ropy-looking strands in your tea, or any other unusual-looking particles, chances are your tea has become a bacterial hotbed. Throw the tea out and clean your container thoroughly before your next attempt.

    Things You'll Need

A large bottle or jar with a cap to hold your tea.

Bags of your choice of tea (black/green tea works best). The number depends on how many servings you want to make. Generally think one bag per serving.

Teaspoons to taste of your choice of sweetener (natural, raw, non-cane sugar works and tastes best). Generally, one teaspoon per bag of tea is enough.

One cup of plain water per serving of tea.

    A glass for drinking.

    Ice.
