i have two big pink kissers and one smaller one i really need to know the difference between a male and female kissing gouromi and i was also curious they have white scales around there face and the rest of them is pink it kind of looks like they have some sort of disease but i got the small one first and he had it after a while then i got to other ones and they had it to so i was thinking it may be normal but ill just ask.

well anyways the hole reason for this add was how to tell the s*x and how to mate them i have a 30 gal tank and i have 2 bottom feeder sucking fish and a gold fish in there will they lay eggs with other fish in there?

also how do i encourage them to mate can i put them in a tank alone so its just them two and put fake plants at the top or something?

also the two big ones were a pair they kissed alot then my little one took over of one they circle each other then kiss is that mateing?

please answer ASAP

  1. A gold fish should not be in with gouramis.  They have very different requirements.  Also, this cute "kissing" is actually fighting most of the time.  The white scales you are noticing are also most likely scaring from this behavior.  If you are really interested in breeding anything, you need to learn a lot more about the fish then just what is male and female.  You should make the tank environment perfect for that specific fish.  You also need to plan ahead on what you will do with the babies if you are successful.  Most pet shops these days are very leery about taking fish from individuals and only the very small personally owned usually will.  You will also need to think about where you will house the babies to allow them to grow large enough.

  2. your tank is far too small for kissing gouramis, and they won't yet be large enough to mate anyway. the circling and "kissing" is fighting over dominance, not necessarily a mating ritual. kissing gouramis are near impossible to visually s*x, and definitely not possibly why they are still juvenile. it could well be that you have all males, hence the fighting which will not cease, and this could also be causing the loss of colour due to stress.

a mature pair (which will be around 10"-12" long) will need a 70-80 US gallon tank at LEAST in order to breed, preferably over 100 US gallons. they are NOT easy fish to breed.

the goldfish should not be in there as it is a coldwater fish and the others (guessing the "sucking fish" are plecos or chinese algae eaters or similar) are tropical.

  3. Kissing gouramis are probably the most difficult of the gouramis to spawn.  Because of the large size when mature enough to spawn, they are generally bred in ponds, rather than tanks.  They are egg scatterers not bubble nest builders or mouth brooders like other gouramis, eat will more readily eat their eggs.
