How do i memorize a menu easy and fast?

I just got a new job at a restaurant as a server. I have no serving experience, but I got hired because the managers opening the store said that I had potential. Now I need to study the menu and memorize it and everything that comes on it, with it, substitutes, ahhhh it's it's a little overwhelming. I don't know where to begin! Does any waiter/ess' have any tips for me to help me learn the menu? How about tips on how to be a good server without giving away that you really don't know what you're doing? I need a little guidance...

While I was in college, I waited tables one summer.  It was very hard work, but also fun and tips were great.  The main thing to remember about being a good server is to watch your tables and be sure to take customers refills on their drinks, take away empty plates, etc. when needed.  I can't remember the rule, but I think it is serve from the right and remove plates from the left, but I am not positive--it could be just the opposite, so it wouldn't hurt to ask one of the experienced servers.

Most customers will be understanding if you tell them you are new.  A few jerks might not, but hopefully you won't run into too many of them right away.  Also, some restaurants have an experienced go around with the newbies (i.e. new servers) while they learn the ropes. Also, right at first, don't be afraid to admit to a customer that you are not sure if one thing can be substituted for another, but offer to check and then get right back to them.

Now for learning the menu.  Check to see if it is okay to take a menu home with you to study.  One way I did memory work was to read something over a few times just before I went to bed and to think about it while I was falling asleep.  I usually knew the material in the morning.  However, this technique does not work for everyone, so don't rely on it completely.

try putting the menu into a song then right the song down and read/sing it over til it gets stuck into your head

been there! i just asked them what the main food ppl will be asking and memorized all that. it took me about a week to do it. after that it will be pretty ez. GOOD LUCK!
