How do i open a PDF file?

i got sent a pdf file from a friend, what program do you need to open it? because it asks me to select one, i tried word and its just a jumble of symbols. what can i do to be able to access it? thanks

the most common pdf reader is adobe acrobat reader. there are a number of others. go to adobe.com and download it.
