  1. It all depends on how long you want to go for, which countries you want to visit and how stingy you want to be. When I went, it cost me about $10,000 for 2.5 months and I visited Germany, Czech Republic, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Italy.

I travelled with my boyfriend and stayed mainly in private rooms in hostels so that's a bit more expensive, however we cooked most nights (chose hostels with kitchens), didn't go to bars, if we wanted to drink we just bought beer or wine from the supermarket and sat in the main squares (all perfectly legal in Europe!) and we bought cereal for breakfast and made sandwiches for each lunch. We did have the occasional nice meal of course however we restricted it to once every few cities.

We travelled via Eurail and I'd recommend it particularly in countries like Germany, France, Scandinavia, Benelux (Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg) as they're very expensive countries to travel in. Spain, Italy, Czech Republic and most Eastern European countries are cheap as chips to travel in, particularly if you get local trains or buses.

    Hope that helps!
