with a new principal, as of 08-09 school year Prior Lake High School, has adopted a new more strict dress code. now, we can not use "headwear" of any type. ((• Headwear – No headwear of any type will be allowed during school hours; 7:20 – 2:10 pm. For purposes of

this policy “headwear” includes, but is not limited to; scarves, baseball caps, headbands, hats, stocking caps,

winter headwear, hoods, and bandanas. This policy is usually relaxed during Homecoming and Spirit

Weeks. Headwear may not be worn or visible unless they are related to religious practice or function, and/or

are needed as a matter of health.))

this is the one thing that has pushed many students to protest. and the school also added this:

Hat consequences are as follows:

1st offense – Referral – can pick up headwear at the end of the school day.

2nd offense – Referral – parent must pick up.

3rd offense – Referral – kept through end of school year.

how do we properly petition the school? How many signatures do we need to repeal this part of the code? what will make the petition more effective?

  1. You are upset you can't wear a hat?  if you understood the reasons why they set these rules you wouldn't be complaining.  Punks can hide drugs in them, small weapons, gang codes/colors, and hats can spread lice. This is for your protection as well as fellow students and teachers.  If you wear your hat or stocking cap to school, take it off once you get on the property.  Easy.

If you want to see if they can allow them, you have to go to the school board.  It's not the principal, it's the board who makes the decisions.  Send them a letter and the petition.

  2. The school doesn't give a c**p what you want or don't want.

    Don't even waste your time.

  3. Why don't you worry more about studying and less about your headbands.  When you get out of high school, you can wear whatever you want on your head.

  4. you don't

Your parents might,  but they would have zero chance

It sounds like a good policy

  5. What's wrong with not being allowed headwear?  It's not really that big a deal, is it?  You won't always agree with everything that happens around you, but I suggest you save your battles for something worth fighting over.  Besides, it is considered very impolite to wear a hat indoors regardless what you see happening around you all the time.  It's really not very respectful when you do.  Hats should be removed any time you are inside, especially while sitting at a table eating.  I wouldn't worry about it if I were you.  Cheers!!

  6. You're upset because you can't wear hats or headbands?  Seriously?  You need to pick your battles.  I doubt you can win this one, and who cares anyway?  I know I don't give a horse's petoot.

  7. There's probably no magic number of signatures. The more you have, the more likely they will take you seriously. Remember your audience. If this is a public school, you must convince the school board. if it is a private school, find out (from your principal perhaps) who makes the rules. That's who you must address your petition to. Treat it professionally and adult. Contact the governing body and ask for the minutes of the meeting where that policy was decided. Read the reasons for the policy and in your petition, address that argument and argue why they should reverse the decision (head gear policies are usually used to combat gangs and lice). Then get as many students and parents and teachers and administrators as possible to sign that petition. Ask the governing body the appropriate way to submit the petition and to propose the rule change. The better you follow the procedures and treat it in a very formal manner, the more seriously they'll take you. I can't guarantee you'll be successful (you probably won't, in my opinion, but don't let that stop you from trying), but even if you are not, it will be a great civics lesson and something you can use later in life.

You can fight city hall, it's just a matter of learning how.
